Direct Messages with The Whale examines the relational frictions between water & human intervention. In collaboration with Ieva Matulaityte, Direct Messages with The Whale was produced in & around bodies of water in New York City & Long Island. Human intervention is symbolized by Matulaityte's interactions with water — whether it be surveying Awosting Falls, diving into Narrow Bay, wading away from Seagate Beach, waking up on the shores of The People’s Beach in Jacob Riis Park — all while dressed in shiny silk & velvet dresses, representing the high modernity of humans’ relationship with watery environments. Human-water relations are rich in irony — and this project delves further into those ironies with Matulaityte’s voiceovers & lyrics, backdropped by audio tracks accentuating the frictions between humans & water.
